SUMMARY:Community Conversations: Youth Justice Reimagined
DESCRIPTION:LA County’s youth justice system is in crisis—and it’s unacceptable.  \nJoin us on Wednesday\, August 27th at 5:30pm as we discuss the future of youth justice in Los Angeles County\, how we’re working to protect Black and Brown youth caught in the system\, and how you can make a difference in this movement!  \n \nIn 2020\, stakeholders from across LA county—including  Urban Peace Institute and our Los Angeles Youth Uprising Coalition (LAYUP) partners—convened to build a new vision called Youth Justice Reimagined\, which calls to phase out our county’s fatally flawed juvenile Probation system and build up a Department of Youth Development which centers care\, support\, and accountability rather than incarceration and punishment. We invite you to learn more about our work to transform the harmful youth prison system and empower the county to better support justice-involved youth through youth development and reentry programs.  \n  \nWe will be joined by:  \n\nNicole Brown  – Policy Director at Urban Peace Institute \n\n\nLeah Zeidler-Ordaz – Community Lawyering Manager at Urban Peace Institute \n\n\nOlivia Shields  – Justice Transformation Policy Coordinator at Urban Peace Institute \n\n\nEmilio Zapién – Director of Communications at Youth Justice Coalition \n\n\nKamryn Mercer – Junior Board Chair and Policy Fellow at Hoops 4 Justice \n\n  \nAt the event\, you’ll learn more about this work from experts in the field\, get helpful tools on how to stay active and informed as we advocate for incarcerated youth\, and have the opportunity to join the movement as we send postcards to our legislators to demand action!  \nRSVP today to join the movement!
