What is the Peace Pledge?

The Peace Pledge is a personal commitment to stand with us to build lasting peace and safety in the communities most impacted by violence and over-policing.

With this pledge, you can help us create lasting safety by joining in support of community-based strategies that reduce violence and uplift impacted communities through community violence intervention, unarmed crisis response, youth diversion and development, and restorative justice.

Why Sign the Peace Pledge?

When you take the pledge, you are committing to joining a community of individuals taking action to advance safety and justice in our most vulnerable communities.

At Urban Peace Institute, we believe that everyone deserves a life that ensures equitable safety for Black and Brown communities and justice rooted in community-led solutions to end the cycle of mass incarceration and ensure freedom from violence.

With your help, we’re building a movement to make that happen.

We will address this statement to your local, state, and national elected officials to advocate for needed programs and policies. We will also use this to let you know about important actions you can take to make sure the people elected to represent you support efforts that will create lasting health and safety.

“To stand for building lasting peace and safety in the communities most impacted by violence and over-policing. This means funding and supporting community-based strategies that reduce violence while uplifting impacted communities, such as community violence intervention, unarmed crisis response, youth diversion and development, and restorative justice. This also means ending practices in our criminal legal system that harm and further marginalize violence-impacted Black and Brown communities, such as racial and gang profiling; sentencing enhancements; fines and fees; and incarceration for probation and parole violations that pose no threat to the safety of others.

As my elected official, I call on you to stand for both safety and justice by investing in community-based programs for health and safety and working to end harmful practices in the criminal and juvenile legal systems.”

It’s allowed us to send out individuals with lived experience who understand the community and are in- grained in it, so we have a tremendous network. This enables us to get to the source of what’s going on with issues in the community before they happen.

William “Blinky” Rodriguez Founder & Executive Director, Champions In Service

It started right here, in LA. This group of people and organizations got together and made a commitment to the work as a coalition. We just want to continue to rise, to get better, to be accepted in other communities. We want people to believe in it. We are one of the best entities out here.

Jerald “Pee” Cavitt Founder & Executive Director Chapter TWO, Inc.

This is what it was always about — it was to be community-driven; it was to be a safety system rooted in community, practiced by the community; and the rest of us are just trying to help it along.

Susan Lee Co-Founder, Urban Peace Institute

Now we have more investment in CIWs; now we have communities that will feel safe; now we have more people indigenous to those communities who are trained in violence intervention work. We have an alternative to suppression and police as the only source of public safety. We have a growing peace army. We’re pulling in a new, younger generation of community violence intervention workers.
