Position Title: Communications Coordinator

Term: Full-time, Hybrid

Compensation: $70,000 to $80,000 depending on experience

General Description

Urban Peace Institute (UPI) is seeking a talented and motivated Communications Coordinator to assist with the organization’s growing social media presence and communications efforts. The position is an essential Communications team member who will focus on creating engaging original content to support UPI’s advocacy efforts and strategic initiatives. The Coordinator is responsible for social media management, content creation, and general communications support.

The ideal candidate must be able to multitask, work both on a team and independently, and have excellent graphic design and copywriting skills. Ideal candidates also have a passion for social justice issues and/or a willingness to deepen their understanding.

Urban Peace Institute is currently following a hybrid schedule, with at least 2 days in office required (4 days in office are required for the first month of employment). This position requires travel in and around Los Angeles County to attend various events. The Coordinator may occasionally be required to be “in office” more than the 2 days a week as necessary.

Day-to-day work will vary based on active projects and organizational needs. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Work closely with the Communications Manager to design and implement a comprehensive communications and social media strategy
  • Work with UPI staff to identify and develop innovative social media content, including videos/reels, and graphics; must be comfortable using Canva and Adobe design tools
  • Maintain the organization’s presence on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Bluesky, Threads, and YouTube, and respond to messages/comments as needed
  • Coordinate meetings with UPI staff members to identify content opportunities
  • Attend community events to capture photos and videos
  • Support with copywriting for website, newsletter, and social media campaigns
  • Contribute to messaging platforms, audience-specific talking points, and narrative development
  • Track social media and website analytics and maintain monthly reporting
  • Assist with website maintenance and regular updates
  • Provide organization-wide graphic design support
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Experience in digital content creation, social media management, and copywriting; nonprofit experience preferred
  • Experience managing a content calendar and data analytics
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications and/or 2-4 years relevant professional experience
  • Proficiency in Adobe Suite, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, as well as Canva, Google Workspace, and WordPress
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas in an engaging and accessible manner
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms and their respective best practices
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment
  • A passion for Urban Peace Institute’s mission and vision
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and a disposition to work in an organization focused on civil rights and equity
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse people across the spectrum of socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender orientation

Salary & Benefits

$70,000–$80,000 depending on experience. Urban Peace Institute offers a comprehensive benefits package, including a fully paid medical plan. Additional benefits include dental, vision, life insurance, disability options, a flexible spending account, and 401k.
